The ASTEC BBS runs on a 5 Mb Mac SE/30 (TeleFinder Host only requires 320k) under System 7.0 with an internal Quantum 210 Mb drive and a MicroNet external 173 Mb Wren drive. An Apple CD ROM player is used to provide access to "BBS in a Box" CD. System backup is via a PCPC JetStream 8 mm tape backup unit using Retrospect v1.3. Hayes ULTRA 144 modems provide 14,400 bps V.32bis support.
PYRO! v4.01 (the only screen saver I know of that doesn't create high-speed data xfer quirks)protects the screen and Microseeds HAM supports administration. No other extensions, besides System 7 items are run. The SE/30 is not powerful enough to support two simultaneous ZMODEM file transfers without giving up about 20% of the ULTRA's compressed file thru-put capability. (about 1320 cps versus 1650 cps average) But, since simultaneous file transfers are fairly infrequent, it is not a problem. A Mac IIci has been tested with simultaneous 14.4k bps transfers and it has the power to keep everything cooking at full speed. (only with a fast hard drive!)
AppleTalk is not normally active on the Mac SE/30 because of the known constraints of running AppleTalk and trying to service interrupts with a 38.4k bps modem. The SE/30 is therefore dedicated to the BBS and it's administration, only.
